It’s a whole new world out there when it comes to surfing. What was once considered an activity for society dropouts has evolved into a multi-million dollar industry. Top professionals are pulling in six figure incomes, some are even making over a million dollars. Things sure have changed. These days, if you aim to compete, you need to train. Improving your surfing no longer involves a simple routine of surfing everyday, you have to lift weights, run, do yoga, and eat healthy. Luckily for us, LA has somebody who is prepared to take your surfing to the next level.
Blending his passions for surfing, fitness and nutrition, LA surfer Nick Nevarez began Hydro Kinetics Sports Science Co. The idea for Hydro Kinetic Sports Science Co.
originally came about when Nick was running a surf camp about
8 years ago called, Tiki Travel’s Surf Camp. “We would take the
kids to wherever the best waves were and set up camp, we would
run mock heats and take videos so they could check out their
surfing. Each summer you could notice the kids getting better
and better.”
Having been a competitive surfer himself, a NSSA regular
and
winner of the 1985 WSA West Coast Championship in the
juniors
division, Nick realized that his true passion was in passing
on
everything he had learned to all the up and coming surfers.
He graduated UCLA with a degree in Kineseology,
paving the way into his new endeavor.
“We really need to wake up this area again and
try to reach all surfers, especially the young
ones,” Nick mentioned when he talked about
why he started HK Sports Science Co. To solve
this problem, Nick has tirelessly organized
many of LA’s hot young rippers and began to
run surf clinics and training sessions to
help improve their surfing.
Health and Fitness for Surfing
HK Sports Science Co. specializes in developing a
health and fitness program to push your surfing
to the next level. They accomplish this with a
special blend of cross-training, proper nutrition
through organic foods, and mock contests,
where the surfer can work on tactics and
strategy, together leading to what it takes to
become a successful competitive surfer.
“The idea is to respect your body and make it feel good,” says Nick “and it will lead towards a deeper level of awareness both within yourself and all around you.” Nick goes on to mention that his program not only encourages healthy eating and proper fitness, but also focuses on giving back to the sport. He has organized beach clean-ups and encourages those he trains to take better care of our oceans.
Hydro Kinetic Sports Science Co. is truly becoming LA’s premiere leader in producing the all around surfer.
