Trash that litters our sea and beaches does more than make for unappealing surf spots. It is a widely recognized threat to the marine environment, killing millions of animals annually through ingestion and entanglement. The problem has become so common that an island of trash, twice the size of Texas, is currently floating in the Pacific Ocean.

Californians have a unique opportunity to confront this issue head-on by helping to pass the Pacific Protection Initiative in the California Legislature. By targeting some of the most abundant items that litter our coast, the Pacific Protection Initiative could foster statewide, and potentially global, change.
